HISTORY

Background

My love for music came when I wanted to listen to "Safety Dance" by Men Without Hats on Amazon Music, after hearing it on my mom's car radio somewhere around late 2015. Later, I decided to listen to other albums the band had. After a few albums, I decided to do some research on the band, particularly Wikipedia, and wanted to know more about this band. From there, I discovered many hidden gems within Men Without Hat's discography. After doing all this effort to know everything about the band, I noticed that my desire to start a band like Men Without Hats had emerged. However, I didn't have anything to start with apart from a 4-string guitar and a cheap, worn out drum set. Months later, I listened to some albums from The Beatles. Although I heard of them before via my dad's love for classic rock, this started a change in my musical taste towards old-school rock. In December 2016, I listened to their Sgt. Peppers album and, over time, I fell in love with their music just like what happened with me discovering Men Without Hats.

Before, I wanted to create a band that was similar in style of Men Without Hats. I then created an imaginary band that comprised of Five Nights at Freddy's characters, particularly Foxy, Freddy, Bonnie, and Golden Freddy. I was originally going to call them The Fazbears, but I changed it to The Fazbear Benders to avoid copyright issues. The band had a similar setup to Men Without Hats compositions with the synthesizers taking prominence through most of the songs. However, now that I've listened to The Beatles, it showed me that there was more to music than synthesizers. Although my love for synths hasn't died down, my love for rock dramatically increased, causing me to imagine a rock band instead of a Men Without Hats-styled one.

One day, when I started my junior year in high school, there was a freshman that I happened to sit next to. I decided to talk to him and found out that he had experience in Blender, a 3d model creating software. We ended up sitting next to each other once the classroom renovations were done. There were stories that came out of there but that's a different story. One time, he mentioned a band called The Who, a band that I didn't recognize at the time. It was one of his favorite bands and most likely regularly listened to them. Around late June of 2018, after school was out for the summer, I listened to Apple Music's The Who Essentials playlist and I immediately recognized some of their songs from the CSI franchise that my grandma would watch regularly. While with my dad in the Bay Area, I listened to The Who's first four studio albums and I slowly started to like their sound. I then listened through most of their discography up to It's Hard (1982) and Faces Dances (1981), listening to them in the wrong order of when they were released. I then started to become a huge fan of The Who just like that freshman. After the school year ended, the freshman had moved to a different town due to family reasons. He was able to give me his email before the school year ended and I sent him a greeting email, with me saying I got into The Who because of him at the end. However, after a few email exchanges, we never talked since. After I got familiar with The Who, I then realized that my life had changed once again and I was now more committed to creating a far more serious band, and creating story-based songs as well.

When 2019 came around, gaining inspiration has been very frequent and it was time for me to make music myself. Although I got started writing music in 2017, I wasn't writing songs professionally until a couple years later. Once I graduated from high school, my life was slowly improving and I was able to spend more time listening to more music. In September, I spent a few weeks with my mom and brought my acoustic guitar with me. I made one video for my music channel there, which was the Roundabout crack intro. Despite that, I didn't do much there due to my lack of desire to learn more chords and scales. By the time October came around, which also came with my birthday, I needed to start committing to improve my skills primarily on guitar and bass so I can actually start or maybe join a band. I got started with the guitar so I can write songs with it. Every once a while, I would switch to bass and learn that as well. Despite its simple concept, I wasn't able to learn guitar or bass frequently due to my lack of time management, my other hobbies getting in the way, and chores. I also plan on finding a part-time job so I can live in my own place for the time being.

After I got out of highschool, I realized that I had to start looking for musicians to help form a band with. I researched some ideas as to how to meet some and the answer that i ended up choosing was a website called Bandmix. I found plenty of musicians that I could partner up with, but my most successful find at that time was a keyboardist that lives in Ohio. I emailed him an introduction letter and we've been exchanging conversations since.

Regarding my music setup, I wanted a change in the room so it satisfies both a music setup and a gaming setup where the desk faces a wall with plenty of room space. In order to do that, the corner desk, that's been there since my parents bought the house, had to be destroyed so it can make more room. It took a couple of months to be completed, as well as cleaning the carpet with a carpet cleaner.

Instrument Experience

After I got familiar with Men Without Hats, I wanted to find an instrument that I could play. I looked in my dad's room and I took out the drum kit that was sitting on the south side closer to the door and moved it to my room. However, I couldn't practice as much as I wanted to because of the drum's bad sound (no improvements on sound, even when heads were manually tuned, as of September 2019) and the loud noises that it produces as I didn't want to cause disturbance to people outside my room. Shortly after I got the drums out of the room, I found a guitar that was hiding behind all the "rubbish" and moved it to my room as well. I noticed it was an electric guitar, but I wasn't too familiar with what they were at the time. The condition of the guitar was in an unplayable state. The first and second strings (high E and B strings) were broke and only four strings were strummable. In addition, the strings were probably made out of copper and needed to be replaced. In short, the guitar needed new strings and an amplifier since there wasn't one.

It wasn't until September 16, 2017, that I was able to fix up the guitar in an more ideal condition. My dad and I went to Guitar Center and bought new strings and a Fender Mustang I Amplifier. I was able to learn and experience of the process of changing the strings on the guitar. Even with all the money spent to get the guitar working, I didn't have the commitment to play on it regularly. It wasn't until October of 2019 that I was able to start committing to it regularly.

In October of 2018, as presents for my birthday, I received two differnt guitars. One was from my dad where I went to Guitar Center and picked out a Fender acoustic-electric guitar and the one from my mom was two different electric guitars in which I can take one. One was a Fender Stratocaster and one was a Gibson SG. After playing with both of them, I ended up choosing the SG since the Strat was too similar to Lotus I had. With that, I had four different guitars (two electric and two acoustic).
